Yellowstone - May 2009
Our May 2009 trip through South Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado. We began in Denver, driving north to Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and the Black Hills area. Next we drove northwest, stopping to see the spectacle of Devil's Tower NM. After a drive through the Bighorn Mountains, we took the Red Gulch / Alkali National Back Country Byway towards Shell Canyon. Continuing west, we arrived at one of our main destinations, Yellowstone NP. After five awesome days in Yellowstone, we made a side detour into Idaho to visit Mesa Falls, and then it was south to Grand Teton NP. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate much for us there the next 3 days, and we had to continue on south before it cleared up. The next point of interest was Fossil Butte NM, and then a stop in Rock Springs, WY. The following day saw us driving a scenic route (who am I kidding, the whole trip was a scenic route) along Flaming Gorge, with a little foray into Firehole Canyon. We continued around Flaming Gorge Reservoir, stopping at the dam, and then Red Canyon. Staying in Vernal, UT, we took a drive through Sheep Creek Canyon and then on to the McConkie Ranch petroglyphs. Next it was on to Dinosaur NM, both the Utah and Colorado sides. From there, we headed south on the Dinosaur Diamond Scenic Byway and eventually found our way to Colorado NM. After all was said and done, we had traveled almost 3500 miles in 15 days. Something tells me the rental car company is going to flag our name in their system...
